I love the web page! As a youngster in the 1960's I purchased a 13' Lyman ($20)that had been sitting in a field full of fresh water for four years. It had some rot and I managed to get another four years out of it. I ran a six horsepower evinrude with remote controls. The easy treatment of the light engine is why it lasted as long as it did. I used it well into the off season making the daily run to school down the Annisquam river. It was a late october camping trip across Ipswich bay that finally finished the boat. We woke to a northeaster blowing up a sea about twice the length of the boat. What was a twenty minute trip to Crane's beach became a three hour fight back. By the time we surfed across the wingaersheek sandbar, the boat had opened enough seams, especially at the garboard, that it took both of us bailing just to keep her from settling. When we finally docked, I had to remove the engine to keep it from going under. A few weeks later, I untied her painter and let her loose and she spent the winter lodged in ice on the marshes of Jones' creek to be carried off to sea during the spring storm tides. To this day, my heart surges at the nearly plumb stems of the old Lymans and would love to find one again.

Great web site. I have owned a 1954 Lyman Islander for 20 years+ and I am the second owner. I mover it from the origional owners boat house to mine on Lake Winnipesaukee where it was our Sunday boat. Keen website--I only wish it had been around in 1986 when I got my 1954 16-foot Lyman. It was just a pile of boards which had been donated to the local Sea Explorers. I gave them $100 for the bits, borrowed a trailer and hauled it out to the house. Didn't really restore it, as much as do the 30-or-so years' worth of maintenance and cleanup. Did the first part of the work in a freezing Wisconsin garage that winter; did nost of the rest in a freezing Wiconsin greenhouse the next winter. I'd never even heard of Lyman boats until I tracked it down out of a boat magazine. Never owned a boat before, let alone a wooden boat. Didn't know what I was doing most of the time. Worked on the boat down by the Fox River in Green Bay, found some parts and fittings in Quebec, and found a 30-hp motor in Detroit. It's a great little boat for the Fox and the bay of Green Bay, and it will soon make the trip to Florida, unless I can find ANOTHER little Lyman to play with.....

Hi, my name is frank and I had a 1958 26' boat. the title said it had a chrysler engine but in reality it was a gm 283. the block was cracked but the manifolds tranny & motor mounts are still intact. the boat was in pretty bad shape. the whole deck was rotted & i didnt have the money to restore it. so i stripped as much of the mech. & elect. that i could and renamed it firewood! i still have all these parts and am willing to part with them. if anyone is interested please write back. scrap is down right now so i'm hoping to make a few dollars off these parts. thank you

I build and restore boats here in the Adirondacks and have just taken apart a 15' Lyman from the Fifties, with a very rotten transom and some rot at the forefoot, so that I am pondering how best to get at the stem. Looks as if the keel system may be hard to take apart and replace, with the garboards clenched with steel (?) clench nails to the plywood keel-cap. Amazed that the plywood is no more rotted than it seems to be, in a 50 year old boat in the water every summer, all summer. The plywood is checked and discolored and damaged at the edges of many planks, but I don't think I need to replank extensively. Wonder if I should move the transom (rebuilt or new?) forward one thickness. Tell me how in the world a boat with nothing in the joints and seams has stayed together so long and rotted so little! I have been trying to send an email to anyone who has information about Lyman boats. I have an 18 ft runabout that looks like the smaller boat on the cover of the new book "Legend of the Lakes". It has been in dry storage since the early 50's on an island. I wish to bring it home to main land 1 mile from shore. Back in this web site again looking for good stuff. Excellent web site Tom as I stated a few days ago in your question and answer pages I aquired the 1970's 26' cruisette and I'm going to restore it. the boat is currently powered with a Chrysler 318 cid 225 hp eng. I have a Chrysler Imperial marine eng sitting in the barn waiting to be put back in service again. It is a "426 D" 325 hp has dual quad AFB carbs on the motor I think this would power the boat very well. What do You think on this matter.

I bought a new 27ft Fiberglas Lyman in 1989 which is very dear to my heart. It's not a woody but looks exactly like one except for the white fiberglas transom. It is much heavier than the several 26' wood Lymans I have owned and will take anything that Lake George throws at her. The cabinet work is beautiful and is in like new condition. I am told that she is built with very expensive BRUNZEEL (sp?) plywood from Holland The company is insured with LLoyds of London and this wood is said to remain solid after being submerged in water for 10 years. Would you have any information on this BRUNZEEL wood?

We have a 1970 26' Lyman Offshore with a 225hp Chrysler Marine engine. The boat was purchased new in 1970 by my father-in-law. We keep the boat on Lake Pend Orielle in northern Idaho.
